Bibb school bus collides with truck; 11 students in hospital By Amy Leigh Womack - awomack@macon.com
Eleven Westside High students were taken to area hospitals after a pickup truck collided with a Bibb County school bus today after 3 p.m. The crash happened at the intersection of Old Columbus and Harrison roads, school officials said.
The bus was traveling east on Columbus Road and the pickup was traveling north on Interstate Parkway when the pickup failed to yield at a stop sign, said Bibb County Sheriff's spokesman George Meadows. The bus T-boned the trunk on the drivers side and the bus veered into a ditch on the side of the road. The drivers of the bus and truck were both taken to area hospitals with neck and back pain and other non-life threatening injuries, said Capt. Cliff Rushin of the Macon-Bibb Fire Department.
Westside principal Laura Perkins said the 11 students were taken to Coliseum Northside Hospital and the Medical Center of Central Georgia. "There didn't appear to be any students in really bad shape. They're shaken up," she said.
Rushin said some of the students may have suffered fractured ankles, bumps and bruises. Perkins said students not taken to the hospital were picked up by parents or transferred to another school bus. "Fortunately it wasn't as bad as it could've been," she said.Labels: accident, local news, macon, school bus |
