| I have a job interview! |
| Sunday, April 27, 2008 |
Tomorrow I have a job interview for a property manager position in Macon. It's a great company, and a beautiful property (though their website is greatly lacking).
Linda, the lady who interviewed me for the last job, and wasn't able to hire me, recommended me for the job. When the girl called me, she told me based on Linda's recommendation that she wasn't going to advertise the job until after she talked to me. I'm really praying this works out. Please pray with me. My interview is at 9:00a.m. tomorrow. I'll keep you updated!
P.S. This means IF I get this job, I MIGHT get an apartment also, which means my own place again! Yay!Labels: apartment management, job search |

| Deal or No Deal? |
| Sunday, January 27, 2008 |
I feel as if I am on the hit t.v. show and Howie is pressuring me to choose a case. They all look the same on the outside. And even though it is a different hot girl holding each case, they are all hot. So how do you choose? I have a job interview in McDonough tomorrow, which is about 45 minutes north of where I live now and 20 minutes south of Atlanta. If I take it, I am thinking of commuting at first; just to see how I like it. Traffic doesn't usually get bad until the exit just past the exit I will work off. It's an apartment community, and by the looks of it I'm thinking it was built by the same construction company as my old community. (Several other things make me think that too.) It's with a really good company, about the size of the last company I worked for. We'll see what happens.
I also had an interview with an insurance company. I got that job, and actually went ahead and started the paper work. I'm just nervous about that one though. It is 100% commission on life insurance, annuity, etc. sales. I know two people who work for the company and both do very well (as in over three times what I make now.) I'm good at sales, so I think I would do well. I'm just not sure it's where I am supposed to be...but it is the only "offer" I have right now.
I interviewed last Friday (the day I got fired) at another apartment community a few miles from my old community. I was really hoping I would get that job, but I think, once again, I asked for too much money. What is up with Macon! Why do I have to take a $6,000 or less pay cut just to get a job around here? The Apartment Guide representative for our area is going to put in a good word for me though, so maybe I will hear something. They really have to realize, you get what you pay for though.
Finally, I got an email from UGA Field Services for a sales position. I'm not sure what that is all about, but they pulled my resume off Monster.com. I'll call tomorrow. I am a Georgia Girl, so you know...wouldn't be a bad company to work for.
As far as if I win the Million Dollars. I guess you'll have to stay tuned and see which case I open, and what's inside!
UPDATE
My interview today for the job outside of Atlanta was postponed. It's okay though. It gave me the opportunity to talk with 3 people who work for or did work for that company. None of them are happy. All of them say it's a hard company to work for, and even harder the property itself is the south-eastern region headquarters. That means a whole lot of chiefs at one place. This Indian cannot work in that environment. I think I'm going to call and cancel the interview tomorrow.
UGA Field Services is a Insurance company and has nothing to do with the University of Georgia. They lost my vote then. Would I be upset if they were called anything else? Nope. But by being called UGA you are misrepresenting that you are affiliated with the University of Georgia. I was just pissed. So, count them out.
This pretty much only leaves the other insurance company and the temporary job for the apartment community. (I think I forgot to tell you about that. I will be working for a local company for the month of February, running one of their properties. It's only a 30 day job, but you never know what may come out of it.) So there you have it. There are my updates.Labels: apartment management, atlanta, interview, job search, macon, sales, uga |

| Life is Good |
| Thursday, December 20, 2007 |
Eternal life is better. Okay, so the title made me think of the song.
Today started out so discouraging. I have looked for a house or apartment everywhere, and just haven't found what I am looking for in the price I am looking for. Just annoyed! Then on top of that, I haven't gotten a job yet either. I've had several interviews, and even a few follow ups, but no one has made a decision yet. Decide already!
At any rate, I found an apartment today, called them up, and was blown away at their prices. I rushed right over to take a look...wow! I loved them. They had upgraded and regular units. The upgraded ones had granite counter tops, hardwood floors in the dining, kitchen, and bathrooms, and all black upgraded appliances. It was beautiful! The other was the same size, just normal appliances, laminate counter tops, and tile in the bathrooms, and $100/mo. cheaper. I can afford either one; both are in the price range I was looking for. I think I'm going to get the cheaper one though. May as well save where I can.
While I was there, the girl showing me the apt mentioned that a property up the road was hiring an assistant manager. When I inquired a little more, I found out a friend of mine had been promoted & needed an assistant now. I rushed right over to talk with her. Even if it were a step down, I wouldn't mind working with Holly. So as I'm talking with her (in my jeans & t-shirt with my daughter in tow...can you tell I wasn't prepared?), she tells me that she would love to work with me, but would rather recommend me for the REGIONAL MANAGER position instead of the ASSISTANT MANAGER position. What!?! Wow! I am so excited. So she called & is setting up and interview for me either tomorrow or Monday. It is only 2 properties, so it would be an incredible opportunity for me to step up in the business.
So for a disappointing start to the day...I'd say it has turned out to be quite an incredible ride! Plus I got to see Elijah today!Labels: apartment management, Elijah |

| Who Died and Made You Princess CAM? |
| Thursday, November 8, 2007 |
I am finishing up my CAM (Certified Apartment Manager) training tomorrow. All in all it has been a pretty interesting class. Each day we have a different teacher, which is nice, keeps things from getting too boring and overwhelming. When you are cramming that much information into one week, you need that! Well today's teacher was less than desirable! This is a very interactive class, which is my preference. I am not one who is afraid to speak. I will answer all the questions, give suggestions, and ask questions too. Now, don't get me wrong, everyone (well not everyone, but at least half of the class) is participating, so it's not like I am this person who keeps talking and holding up the class or anything. Generally, I am answering the questions & telling the page number I found the answer on, so everyone else can hi-lite it in their books. This is just how we do it. One person looks up the answer & tells everyone else, so you don't have to keep flipping.
At any rate, today we were discussing Maintenance Management. The girl teaching the class (we'll call her Nikki, because that's her name, and she doesn't deserve to have it changed for her protection), Nikki says "you need to make sure on your property inspections that you are digging trash out the bushes, because if the guys don't think you will look there they won't clean it up. But, if they know you are going to check the bushes they will clean the bushes."
So I decide to impart upon the class my experience with maintenance recently...
"We just finished PM (preventative maintenance) on my property, and I told the guys before we started that I would be accompanying them. Their reactions were less than pleasant. I was told 'It's hard work' 'Have you done this before?' 'You know we won't be going slow, you are going to have to keep up.' By day 3 the guys were saying 'Wow, thanks, this has been much faster and easier with your help.' because I didn't just accompany them looking over their shoulder. I helped! I was working too."
Nikki's response: (insert better than you attitude here) "Who hasn't done PM?"
Excuse me! My point was not to pat myself on the back for doing PM, nor to pat myself for keeping up. My point was once the guys realized that I wasn't out to inspect every step they took, and that I was actually being a team player, they responded much better. Everyone else in the class understood my point...why did Nikki miss it?
After class, one lady, whom I only met on Monday goes "Wow, could she have been any more rude to you today?"
I'm glad she will not be returning tomorrow.Labels: apartment management, CAM, training |

THREE BOYS CHARGED, APARTMENT MANAGER SAVES THE DAY
Okay, so technically that isn't exactly how it went down...so far only one guy has been charged, and though my video tape will help prosecute in court, the cops caught the guys without the tape, but I like the headline :)
The other day when I was preparing late letter for the the many residents in my community who refuse to pay rent on time (grr), I noticed several residents late who are never late. I thought it was odd, but went on about my business. Well sure enough, I received 4 phone calls by 9:30 the next morning all saying they had dropped their rent check in the drop by Sunday evening. By the 3rd call I told the girl to stop payment on her check and I would call her back. I instantly went to my camera & reviewed the tape from Sunday night. At 2:30 a.m. I watched a young guy fish checks out of the drop box. Stupid looked right at the camera. I have turned the tape over the the investigating officer. I was so proud of myself :)
These 3 guys have been on a spree the last week & a half, hitting over 40 apartment communities from Atlanta to Warner Robins stealing thousands of dollars worth of checks and money orders. Some were recovered at the time of their arrest, others (including my 4) were not.
The cool thing is the guy currently in custody is not the guy on my tape, so they will be able to make another arrest this week.Labels: apartment management, theft |
